 The Importance of Physical Capacity

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." (Mark 12:30)

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your body." (1 Corinthians 6: 19-20)

  • Why is our body important to God? How does developing our physical capacity help to honour God?
  • Identify 5 benefits of developing physical capacity. Why should leaders develop their physical capacity? What benefits would you gain by investing in your physical capacity?
  • Identify 5 symptoms of neglect in the physical area. How do these limit leadership capacity? Can you recognise any symptoms of neglect or burnout in your own life? Please write down your thoughts.

A Strategy for Physical Capacity

"Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is you spiritual act of worship." (Romans 12:1)

  • How does our physical capacity influence our ability to offer our body to God as a living sacrifice? How does investing in our physical capacity contribute to a lifestyle of worship?

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9)

  • In order for us to maintain a physical capacity that will allow us to be effective in our leadership, we need to invest time in private disciplines regularly and consistently. Why is it important that we persist with these private disciplines if we want to reap long-term benefits? What can you do to ensure you do not give up?

Practising Physical Disciplines

  • The physical disciplines can be separated into the three categories of physical exercise, rest, and nutrition. What practical steps can you take to achieve a greater balance in each area of physical discipline? What challenges will you have in making any changes? How will you overcome them?
